Artist Statement.

We all have the tendency to see familiar objects in unrelated things. Our brain seeks pattern in randomness. The painted marks I am photographing are not only graffiti cover ups, they are also amorphous spaces within the urban landscape that allow for the imagination to create a meaning for them. The marks were painted without the intention of creating art, instead it was to remove it.

The painted marks go through a sine curve of importance. Valueless graffiti is given a focus (value) when the local authority spends money covering it up and I return them to works of art through my photography. By photographing them as works of art I am giving them value once again. Then by printing the images on cheap calico, the material used questions the image’s value. But, creates what could potentially be a valuable series of artworks.

The photographs create a whole new materiality to the image and to the painted surface itself. A strange medium between the surface of the painted wall and the surface of the cheap calico. The tapestries are large scale, forcing the viewer to step back away from the image to be able to see it entirely and if one were to look closely, one could get lost in the multiple materialities of the printed images.

I created a map of Brighton, pinpointing each ‘Cloud’ spot to allow the viewer to go and visit the photographed spaces and experience the work for themselves. Turning these spaces that you would normally walk past into extensions of the gallery space. I documented each painting overtime and saw it change as it was graffitied over and then painted back again in an ever ending cycle. A large part of this project is the continuous documentation of these paintings by the public as they change. I’ve created a website for the public to view the work, research into it, as well as becoming a part of the project by uploading their own images of the Cloud spots  at #foundcloud. As well as uploading newly found Cloud spots for others to visit at #cloudspot on Instagram.
